Hyaluronic acid, cross-linked so that one injection is enough.

Native hyaluronic acid is degraded in the joint within days. Our technology stabilises the molecule without changing its biocompatibility, and makes the resulting gel easy to inject despite its high concentration.

Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a natural component of the human body and has been used for medical purposes for more than 50 years. It is biocompatible, non-toxic and non-immunogenic, and binds large amounts of water — which is why it gives synovial fluid its viscoelastic properties.

BioPolymer uses only high-purity hyaluronic acid of non-animal origin, produced by biofermentation. This rules out the foreign-protein reactions associated with animal-derived HA. After production, every batch is tested and verified for endotoxins.

CRM® — Covalent Reticulated Matrix

In its natural form, hyaluronic acid is broken down quickly by the enzyme hyaluronidase and by free radicals. The only lasting protection is cross-linking. CRM® establishes covalent bonds between the hyaluronic acid chains and forms a three-dimensional matrix that enzymes and free radicals penetrate less easily.

The result is a gel that stays in the joint longer while keeping the biocompatibility of unmodified hyaluronic acid. Biocompatibility has been confirmed by independent laboratories for medical device testing.

ATT — Advanced Thixotropic Technology

A highly cross-linked gel is stable — and, normally, hard to inject. Advanced Thixotropic Technology, patented in 2013, resolves this conflict: under the shear force of the injection the gel becomes less viscous and flows through fine needles; once the force is gone it returns to its original viscosity.

ATT therefore combines two properties that usually exclude each other: a covalently cross-linked, ultra-stable gel and smooth injection.

Viscosity under injection pressure At rest — Cross-linked matrix, high viscosity: the gel keeps its structure in the joint. Under injection pressure — Chains align, viscosity drops: the gel flows through the needle.

Designed for a single injection

Crespine Gel contains 15 mg hyaluronic acid per ml, 14 mg of it cross-linked, in a 2 ml prefilled syringe. The combination of high concentration, CRM® cross-linking and ATT allows a treatment cycle of one intra-articular injection per joint.

Published cohort data describe improvements in pain and function over nine months after one injection of Crespine Gel and over twelve months after one injection of Crespine Gel+.
